Course Description: This course examines dietŐs role in health promotion and disease prevention in the US today; federal dietary guidance to the public over the past century; the influence of food industry on federal dietary advice to the public during the past half-century; the roles of the USDA and DHHS in promoting a healthy diet; major arguments of critics of the American food industry; governmentŐs current policies designed to address the obesity epidemic and other diet-related problems throughout the lifecycle; and the steps involved in developing a pubic policy.
The course meets face-to-face at the Graduate Center on the 1st day of class, the last day of class, and 1 day mid-semester (tba). |

Online Component: The course is fully online. The online component of the course will include extensive use of Bb Discussion Board; identification of student leaders to guide the examination of specific topics; some group work; and weekly written assignments. |
