Course Description: Designed to study the structure of the urban American public education system at early childhood and childhood levels. Course includes an historical overview of education; constitutional education law; reducing the widening achievement gap; promoting equitable education opportunities for minorities and at-risk school populations; the structure of urban schools and school districts; and factors that promote more effective teaching and effective schools. Requires visits to early childhood and childhood classrooms, schools, and communities. Coursework will include contributions to each student's academic portfolio. |

Online Component: Students will receive materials via Blackboard, which will include audio files of prepared lectures, audio/visual files of prepared lectures, podcasts, Power Point presentations and external links in place of traditional classroom lectures. Required discussion board participation. All assignments to be digitally submitted. |
