Course Description: This course is an introduction to cultural anthropology. Topics we will cover will include such areas as: the concept and beginnings of culture, language and culture, early man, human population ecology and economy, the organization of family life, kinship, marriage, law and order, warfare and political organization, social stratification, class and castes, religion, art, culture and personality, applied anthropology, and a brief history of anthropological theory. In short, we will cover systematically, although briefly, most aspects of the human condition. We will examine some of the various ways mankind has used to organize themselves on this planet, and we will learn some of the reasons why this organization and variety exists. |
