Course Description:
Group Theory: groups of symmetries, modular number
systems, properties of groups, subroups, permutation groups,
Lagrange's Theorem, Burnside's Theorem, homomorphism and isomorphism
theorems. Introductions to rings and fields. Applications to group
codes and error-correcting and detecting codes.
Special Requirements:
Students in this 300-level math course are either math
or computer science majors and are very "computer ready."
Online Component:
All homework assignments are done using Blackboard
Discussion. At the end of each class period, each student draws a
homework assignment that is due --on Blackboard--before the next
class meeting.
Pre-requisites:
Calculus III and a co- or pre-requisite of Linear Algebra
